Considerable efforts have been made recently in Europe to reduce the burden of Nosocomial Infections by fostering and extending their surveillance via the HELICS programme. The HELICS Symposium presented the results of these efforts and discussed the implementation of preventive strategies in European healthcare systems. Within the context of improving patient safety in Europe, a platform for further efforts in the future was established.
